Kidnap and Ransom Risks for Cross Border Truckers

Jared Duncan, Managing Director, One80 Intermediaries

There has been a dramatic increase in kidnap and ransom cases throughout the globe, and the border between the US and Mexico is no exception.  According to the April 2020 report by Control Risks, a crisis response consultancy with 37 offices worldwide, during the first quarter of 2020, 48% of all cases recorded by Control Risks in the Americas took place in Mexico.  What’s most disturbing is that 71% of abductions happened in transit.

With that as a backdrop we at One80 have recognized the increased risk of hijack and extortion for our transportation clients at the border between the USA and Mexico.  We have therefore partnered with Hiscox Special Risks to offer a tailored insurance program to protect these operations and their employees.

Our new Transportation Threat Protect program helps firms to mitigate kidnap and ransom risks by providing access to a global security consultancy with on the ground support to help manage an incident to safe resolution.   The program also provides financial protection such as ransom cost reimbursement, employee salary expenses, travel, accommodation, medical costs and psychiatric care.  Public relationships support to manage and minimize any reputational damage to the business is also included.

At One80 it is our mission to provide customized, market leading coverage to the specialized industry classes that we serve.  Transportation Threat Protect program for our cross border truckers is just another example – A New Direction in Specialty Insurance.
